19 Loggers strike a pose for this remarkable photograph taken in Humboldt County, California. Due to the immense size of the trees, they could not be climbed through use of the customary rope and leather techniques. Instead, choppers cut deep notches, into which long iron-tipped hardwood planks, or springboards could be inserted. A series of springboards provided a base upon which to stand while the cutting took place.
