The Logger on the left is holding a "Gunstick" which is a tool to determine where the tree will fall. To use you set the base of the Gunstick in the undercut and the diamond will point to where you will need to build the "crib" which is a pile of smaller trees and limbs which help cushion the fall and help prevent damage to the tree. The fallers are standing on spring boards which elevate them off the forest floor and up above the Butt of the tree.
